"We will continue to stage a similar rally until Israel stops their military aggression."
Pekanbaru (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of students staged a rally in the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru on Thursday urging the United Nations to impose sanctions on Israel for their continued aggression in Palestine.

"We likewise ask the UN to press Israel to stop their attacks on Palestine in the light of many deaths in the violence," one of the demonstrators, Andi Irawan said.

The rally involving hundreds of students from different universities took place outside the Pekanbaru municipality office.

In the tightly-guarded rally, the demonstrators distributed leaflets among passersby denouncing the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip.

They also carried a number of posters depicting Israeli troops` brutality in the military aggression.

"We will continue to stage a similar rally until Israel stops their military aggression in Palestine," the other demonstrator, Aliyah said.

Around 100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 800 have been injured until the sixth day of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip on Nov 19. Most of the victims are women and children.

During the rally the students also raised funds from passers-by to help the Palestinian people.

The rally caused congestion on Sudirman Street in Pekanbaru.

Also on Thursday, hundreds of cadres and members of the Islam-based United Development Party (PPP) staged a rally outside the office of the US Consulate in the North Sumatra provincial capital of Medan to condemn Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

A similar rally was also held in Yogyakarta on Wednesday involving hundreds of members of Muslim hardline group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI).
