Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Police will protect 38,499 churches as part of the 10-day Operation Candle, from December 23, 2012 to January 2013, in light of Christmas, New Year`s Eve and the New Year.

"We will ensure that people who go to churches are safe during the festive season," said General Timur Pradopo, Chief of the National Police, on Monday.

The Operation Candle will be launched after the outcome of a similar operation (held last year) is evaluated. Last year, the police learnt to reduce traffic congestion in Java`s coastal areas.

The police will improve its services to the public by making Christmas and New Year celebrations convenient and safe.

The police are working closely with military officers to deter terror threats that may surface during Christmas and on New Year`s Eve.(*)
