Makassar (ANTARA News) - Palopo mayor Andi Tendriajeng has been named a suspect on charge of misusing funds collected from a number of Area Working Unit (SKPD) of the city education office.

"Based on investigations of a number of witnesses the city mayor had illegally collected Rp3.9 billion from a number of SKPD," chief spokesman of the South Sulawesi High Prosecution Office Nur Alim Rachim said.

Andi, who was named a suspect last week, did not explain to the education office for what he collected the fund which was originally appropriated for free education in 2011, Nur Alim said.

"It is almost unlikely the financial manager of an SKPD would dare to reject a request from the city mayor and it is similarly unlikely that the mayor had wanted to borrow the money. Witnesses said the money has been used by the mayor for personal interest," he said.

He said the investigators from the prosecution office had also questioned the head of the city layout and residential area management.

He said Andi had also illegally collected billions of rupiahs from other agencies in the city.

Two other junior officials of the city administration have also been named suspects in the same case.

Head of the city education office Muhammad Yamin and another official were named suspects earlier and they already stood trial by the Palopo special corruption court.

"The city major is named a suspect based on the testimonies given in the court by the two suspects," Nur Alim said here on Tuesday .(*)
