With only ten political parties to participate it is hoped the General Elections Commission (KPU) could pass all the stages for the elections well, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The next general elections in 2014 are expected to be more orderly and smoother with only ten political parties allowed to participate in them.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed the hope here on Tuesday in a general lecture on democracy staged by the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI).

With only ten political parties to participate it is hoped the General Elections Commission (KPU) could pass all the stages for the elections well, he said.

"It is hoped their organization will be better and more orderly," he said.

On the occasion the President also suggested that outdoor campaign rallies involving hundred thousands of people could be replaced by indoor activities with attendees numbering only one to two thousands for candidates to present their missions and visions.

He said through the indoor method it is hoped candidates could present their views more freely while people could digest them better.

Through it people could ask "questions in detail such as about the economy, welfare, corruption eradication, the environment, international relations and other issues," he said.

He also said that all parties must support anyone who wins in the presidential elections and would be willing to cooperate with him or her so that his or her government would run well and could deliver welfare for the people.

"Anyone who wins the presidential elections must be supported when he/she starts running the government. It will be hard for him or her to lead if situation remains like during competition after the elections or if there are people who deliberately wish to disrupt his or her government," he said.

Ten political parties have been confirmed to participate in the 2014 legislative elections which would later be followed by presidential elections.

The 10 parties are the National Democrat Party (Nasdem), the Nation Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar), the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), the Democrat Party (PD), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the People`s Conscience Party (Hanura).

The last legislative elections in 2009 were won by the Democrat Party with Golkar finishing second and PDIP third.

President Yudhoyono who is from the Democrat Party may not seek reelection in 2014 according to the law as he has been in the post for two terms. (*)
