Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri gave Rp5 million to the family of Karno (37), a volunteer, who was killed by strong currents present in a river, when he was trying to help flood victims last week.

"We have given compensation and expressed our condolences to Karno`s family members," said the minister on Friday.

Salim said Karno was a great person. Although he was laid off and had difficulties in life, he was willing to help others, especially flood victims.

The minister visited Karno`s family on Friday in Tebet, South Jakarta.

The ministry of social affairs gave Rp5 million to Karno`s family. Karno`s wife, Nurlaila (35), had given birth three days back.

Salim is grateful to Karno for helping flood victims in Tebet.

"Poverty and hardships did not stop Karno from helping others. He even sacrificed his life," said the minister.

Karno, who is a resident of Kebon Baru, Rt 10, Rw 10, Kebon Baru sub district, died after strong currents of the Ciliwung River swept him away while he was assisting flood victims last week.
