Pamekasan, E Java (ANTARA News) - The government is planning to set up a salt institute in Pamekasan district, East Java, to improve the quality of salt production in Madura Island.

Dr Moh Mahfud, a researcher of the Marine Study Center at Trunojoyo University in Bangkalan, said on Monday the institute will be set up in cooperation with the university.

The institute will function as a national salt research center, Pamekasan district head Kholilurrahman said.

He said he proposed the setting up of such an institute when then maritime affairs and fisheries minister Fadel Muhammad visited the district at the end of 2011.

The government has prepared 4 hectares of land as location for the salt institute, he said.

"We believe that with the presence of such an institute salt production in Pamekasan will increase," he said.
