Lu Chuntao was born in the 60s in Shanghai. His exploration and experiments in ink painting inevitably took place in the context of the dramatic changes in Chinese contemporary art scene since 1980s and were in line with the evolution of Shanghai-school of painting. Looking back upon Lu's practice, we would easily find that he's been consciously catching up with the changes of the time. Cultural nostalgia functions as a source of inspiration for his practice. By interpreting the "imagery" of Chinese classic aesthetics with a contemporary touch, he endeavors to detach his work from the sense of solemnity and aloofness unique to traditional literati painting and to create a poetic and yet critical secret land of culture. In terms of painting language, he manages to integrate techniques of both Chinese and western painting and of both classic and contemporary painting, and to combine the narration of time with space, turning it into a flowing multi-dimensional media to extend the dimensionality of ink art. In terms of the use of colors, he gives up the tradition of using ink only and tries to outline shapes with colors, which becomes a signature of his style. Lu's ink art sets an exemplary example of individual artist based exploration in the course of the development of Shanghai-school of painting, which is widely recognized as an origin of the contemporaneity of Chinese art.
MOCA Loewen's exhibition continues Lu's previous theme "Lotus Pond" series, but he pursues strong sense of "work consciousness" and "work expression" on further. This time Lu Chuntao's "Lotus Pond" coming out in Singapore is evidence that his exploration and practice gain the recognition of contemporary art. The exhibition will bring audience a brand-new visual feast about Lu's "Lotus Pond," and thereby enhance the ink painting influence in the international art exchanges.
