Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - Bengkulu province is in need of Rp7 trillion of funds for infrastructure development to raise the welfare of local community, according to a local government official.

"We need the funds to develop the infrastructure of education, health, food security, and road," Bengkulu regional development planning board spokesman Edyu Waluyo said here on Saturday.

In education sector, he said the province wanted to construct some elementary to high school buildings, in addition to Bengkulu-Lubuklinggau road that will pass by Lake Dendam Tak Sudah.

Edy explained that the funds would also be spent on road expansion from Pagar Dewa to Pulau Bai port, irrigation, handling of coastal and river abrasions, and developing 1,560 hectares of new rice fields.

"And for health sector, we need the funds to develop M Yunus hospital and other community health centers in various districts," he said, adding that without financial support from the central government, Bengkulu would remain a disadvantaged region.
