"The use of chip technology like in credit cards will avoid the fraud," BI`s Director of Public Relations Diffi A Johansyah said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia (BI), the central bank of Indonesia, will oblige commercial banks issuing debit cards to apply chip technology like they do for their credit cards by the end of 2015.

BI`s Director of Public Relations Diffi A Johansyah said here on Friday, that the requirement is issued due to card frauds through swipe system.

"The use of chip technology like in credit cards will avoid the fraud," he said.

Generally, the use of debit cards through a swipe system allows merchants to break customers` data. Hence, the use of the chip technology like in credit cards is important to increase security.

"The use of the chip technology will increase security since data can not be duplicated," he said.

Johansyah added BI also asks customers to be more careful in using their cards.

Regarding monitoring responsibility, Johansyah said that it was not only BI`s responsibility, but also the issuing banks`.

"Actually, it is also the responsibility of the issuing banks since transactions are recorded in their accounts, not in BI`s," he said.

Johansyah added this regulation will be implemented gradually since the use of Electronic Data Capture (EDC) in the swipe machine is still used widely, particularly for payment made by foreigners shopping in Indonesia.(*)
