Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Commissioner of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) William D. Magwood IV is in Jakarta on April 7-10 at the invitation of the Indonesian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), according to the US Embassy here on Tuesday.

William`s visit is to highlight long-standing cooperation between the two regulatory agencies in the areas of nuclear safety and regulation.

In the United States, the NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine, through licensing, inspection and enforcement of related regulations and laws.

In April 8 meetings, Commissioner Magwood stressed the importance of strong, transparent, independent, and technically-oriented nuclear regulation in the long planning process needed to build a nuclear power plant.

Magwood`s trip will include a joint NRC-BAPETEN seminar on nuclear energy safety as wells visits to a hospital using nuclear medicine and Indonesia`s largest research reactor.
