"We have already had capability to compete in creating an automotive technology and so it is now time for us to compete," he said here on Monday at the inauguration of PT Astra Daihatsu Motor`s automotive assembly plant and research and development center.
Several government figures attended the event including the vice president`s wife, Mrs Herawati, Industry Minister MS Hidayat, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik, Transportation Minister EE Mangindaan and W Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan.
According to the vice president, automotive technology is developing very quickly and requiring high quality human resources so that research and development is important.
In the future, he said, development of automotive industry would be determined by technology competition.
"There will be competition between hybrid, electric and hydrogen technologies. We do not know yet which one will win," he said.
He said the three technologies are still competing with each other.
VP Boediono also expressed confidence with its reliable human resources Indonesia would be able to compete.
In view of that "we support the automotive company`s efforts to set up a research and development center with regard to developing reliable human resources."
He also said that it was correct for the company to set up a production center outside Japan in Indonesia.
"There is no reason for foreign automotive industries not to build factories in Indonesia in view of the country`s fast growing market," he said. (A061/YH)
