Indonesia has passed all requirements and granted with accreditation "A Status", Chairperson of Komnas HAM Siti Noor Laila said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) of Indonesia has accredited with "A Status" of Paris Principles 2012-2017, a certificate related to evaluation criteria for human rights institutions.
Indonesia has passed all requirements and granted with accreditation "A Status", Chairperson of Komnas HAM Siti Noor Laila who attended a meeting of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Geneva, Switzerland, May 6-8, 2013, told ANTARA here on Tuesday.
Under the Paris Principles, the NHRIs are required to protect human rights, promote human rights, mandate and competence, autonomy from government, independence guaranteed by statute or constitution, pluralism, adequate resources, and adequate powers of investigation.
Laila said the award was received as a sustainable work of all Indonesia`s National Human Rights Commissioners from the beginning until now.
"This award was also received as the supports from civilians, press-media and all related human rights stake-holders," she said.
The ICC which is officially titled "International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights", coordinates the relationship between NHRIs and the United Nations (UN) human rights system.
The ICC is the only non-UN body whose internal accreditation system, based on compliance with the 1993 Paris Principles, grants access to UN committees.
Indonesia`s National Human Rights Commission was established by Presidential Decree No 50/1993 and had been reformed since 1999, after the downfall of Soeharto government, it was based on the Law No 39/1999 that also set out its functions and provided for its funding, membership, and powers.
Laila added the ICC meeting also discussed about the Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), UN Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) and other issues related to human rights.(*)
