"We will review the whole security system in all underground facilities," The President and CEO of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. Richard C Adkerson said.
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - US-owned PT Freeport Indonesia has pledged it will provide a safe working environment for its workers when production starts again later.

The President and CEO of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. Richard C Adkerson said in a press release to ANTARA here on Thursday "we will review the whole security system in all underground facilities."

Richard said the review would be done in cooperation with the Indonesian authorities.

"We will continue supporting the injured, bereaved families, PT FI workers and local community," he said.

He explained the incident occurred after the ceiling of one of the underground training facilities located 3,020 meters above sea level collapsed at around 7.30am on May 14.

"The incident did not happen at the production area but in a training room for workers undergoing annual refreshment and underground safety training," he said.

Richard said that day was the second day of the scheduled compulsory training program for underground workers.

"Forty workers were registered taking part in the program," he said.

He said the training room measured 5x20 square meters and it had been used since 2000. He said around 200 square meters of debris fell covering an area of 4x10 square meters.

The location of the incident was at an underground training facility 3,020 meters above sea level and the epicenter of the collapsed was right above the classroom but away from the production area.(*)
