Yogyakarta (ABTARA News) - Around 200 students from various universities in the country are taking part in a Nuclear Youth Summit (NYS) 2013 held here aimed at encouraging the use of nuclear technology for the welfare of the people.

"NYS is expected to serve as a forum to share information and scientific knowledge among potential youths as future leaders and scientists," said Chairman of the National Nuclear Youth Community Kommun Akhmad Aji Wijayanto on the sidelines of the NYS 2013 here on Friday.

The three-day NYS 2013 to end on Saturday will be highlighted with general lecture given by nuclear scientists including Dr H-Holger Rogner and Mika Tanhuanpaa from Finland, nuclear discussion and competition in papers to be presented, Akhmad said.

The papers use various titles such as nuclear research, nuclear human resources in Indonesia, public reception of nuclear technology and prospects of the use of nuclear technology in the future.

The papers to be presented in front of jury are selected from 300 papers received by the organizing committee," Kommun facilitator and an official from the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan) Adipurwa said.

The NYS participants are also invited to visit a nuclear research facility in the city, Adipura said.

The facility produces various nuclear isotopes for use in health field, industry and nuclear research,he said.

He said currently Kommun, which was established on 11 February, 2013 has 80 members from various tertiary educational institutions such as UGM, UI, ITB, STTN (Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nuklir), in Java and other islands.

Batan Chief Djarot Wisnubroto said he regretted the scrapping of nuclear technology field of study at universities such as UGM.

UGM began that study in 1981 aimed at producing experts in nuclear technology especially for development of nuclear power.

"Fortunately study program still exists although focusing only on general application of nuclear technology and science," Djarot said.

The government`s plan to develop nuclear power plant has long been delayed partly on rejection by the local people to use their area as location for the facility.(*)
