KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 29, 2013 (ANTARA/PRNewswire) -- Malaysia Major Events played an integral part in securing the bid to host the World Table Tennis Championships 2016 in Kuala Lumpur from 28th February to 6th March 2016.
This is indeed a significant step in increasing Malaysia's profile as an avenue for major sporting events and in elevating the sport nationally to greater heights by uniting table tennis enthusiasts in one global arena.
The successful bid was a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors: Malaysia Major Events, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and Table Tennis Association of Malaysia.
Tony Nagamaiah, general manager of Malaysia Major Events said, "Malaysia Major Events saw the potential of hosting the World Table Tennis Championship 2016 in Malaysia as both economically and socially beneficial to the nation. We were there from start to finish in securing the event, which gives us the confidence to bid for more events similar to the World Table Tennis Championships in the near future."
As a strategic events destination, Malaysia will proudly host the said Championships which will be organised by the Table Tennis Association of Malaysia and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Malaysia Major Events. The much-anticipated event is expected to attract 7,500 foreign spectators and 700 foreign participants -- generating an expected economic impact of more than RM40 million to Malaysia.
Malaysia is increasingly recognised as a destination of choice for such major sporting events, with the availability of world-class airports, venues, facilities and not to mention the warm Malaysian hospitality. With years of hosting major events, Malaysia has certainly caught the world's attention.
Malaysia Major Events is constantly looking for avenues to drive tourism into the country to support the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia's promotional campaign of Visit Malaysia Year 2014. Last year, Malaysia managed to attract RM916million in tourism spend from tourists visiting Malaysia for major events and with the support of World Table Tennis Championships 2016, hopes to attract more in the coming years.
The World Table Tennis Championships features men's and women's team events and is held every two years since its first competition in 2000. Meanwhile, the 2018 Championships have been slated to take place in Halmstad, Sweden.
