Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The national flag was raised half-mast at the state palace here on Sunday to mourn the death of the chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Taufiq Kiemas.

The flag was also seen raised half-mast at the private residence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java.

President Yudhoyono on Saturday evening called on the nation to raise the national flag half-mast for two days following the death of Taufiq Kiemas earlier that day in the General Hospital in Singapore.

"I invite you all the people of Indonesia to raise the flag half-mast for two days," he said at a press conference at his residence following the death of the husband of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Taufiq Kiemas was buried at the Heroes` Cemetary at Kilibata on Sunday morning in a state ceremony led by President Yudhoyono.

A lot of state officials and public figures were seen attending the ceremony.

Taufiq Kiemas who is also a senior member of the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle died at 7pm Singapore time or 6pm Western Indonesia Time at the age of 71 after being treated for several days due to heart condition.

His health deteriorated after visiting East Nusa Tenggara along with Vice President Boediono to mark the commemoration of the birth of the state ideology Pancasila and the site of the struggle of the founder and first president of the state, Bung Karno, who is also his father in law.
