Jakarta, June 10, 2013 (ANTARA) - Almost 50% of the world's shrimp consumption is provided by several Southeast Asian coutries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Therefore, those countries, especially the members of ASEAN, have to strengthen the collaboration among them. "The stronger collaboration among the ASEAN member states is extremely necessary, especially when it comes to enhancing the shrimp production generated by the implementation of Good Agriculture Practices (GAP)." This was conveyed by the Director-General of Aquaculture, Slamet Soebjakto, when welcoming the delegates of the ASEAN member states in the "The 4th Meeting of ASEAN Shrimp Alliance (ASA)” at the Salak Hotel, Bogor.

Slamet explained, ASA, which was established in 2006, aims to bridge the private and public sectors in terms of the information sharing related to shrimp production and marketing, the standard-setting shrimp production among the ASEAN states as well as the dialogue involving the world's shrimp experts. "The most important thing to discuss in the meeting is about the GAP implementation process into the shrimp culture throughout the ASEAN member states. The comprehensive GAP implementation will produce high quality shrimp which eventually will decrease the shrimp trade and export hindrance to the destination countries, increasing the economy growth in
ASEAN region," said Slamet.

He added, the objective of the ASA meeting in Indonesia is quite relevant with the national shrimp issue. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries through the Directorate General of Aquaculture is keen to re-establish the national shrimp superiority by implementing the Proper Aquaculture Method (PAM), so that in addition to increasing the shrimp production, it also improves the standardized shrimp quality." The Directorate General of Aquaculture partners with related institutions, both private and public ones, to synergize PAM with International and Regional Standard, namely ASEAN Shrimp GAP. The output of the synergy will be the guideline in the shrimp culture and also support the quality shrimp production increase," concludes Slamet.

The Meeting to be attended by the delegates of the ASEAN member states will be held from June 10-11, 2013.
