Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Visiting Nicaragua Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Santos Lopez has invited Indonesian investors to take part in the construction of a canal in Nicaragua which will link the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

"A feasibility study for the project is still underway. The result will determine in which sector private partners can take part," said the minister after meeting with Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa here on Tuesday.

Lopez explained the Nicaragua canal will be bigger than that of Panama canal. Apart from waterway, the Nicaraguan government also plans to build a harbor, gas and oil pipeline and economic zone on the side of the canal.

He added Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has recently signed an agreement with a Chinese firm allowing the company the green light to start construction of the multi-billion dollar waterway.

Meanwhile, Marty Natalegawa said he will send a number of government officials to Nicaragua to determine potential cooperation between the two countries.

"Nicaragua experienced tough situation in political and security sector. However, the country has proven its resilience. I expect more cooperation between the two countries in the future," he said.
