I am a pioneer of traffic safety."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command held an event at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout here on Sunday to campaign against traveling by motorbike for the post-fasting holiday.

"This is part of the Operasi Patuh campaign against traveling by motorbike," the command`s director of traffic, Senior Commissioner Chryshnanda.

At the event police officers distributed stickers and pins to passing bikers reading "I am a pioneer of traffic safety."

Chryshnanda said the effort was taken as part of the solution to improve public awareness of the importance of safety.

He hoped through the campaign event motorists would be more aware of the importance of respecting traffic laws.

To reduce the number of travelers by motorbikes, Chryshnanda said he would also call on companies to provide buses for their workers who wish to "mudik" or return to their home villages for the holiday based on their corporate social responsibility programs.

To assure safety, he called on would-be bikers not to carry children with them or more people to surpass capacity.

"We will set up check-points to assure the calls are heeded," he said.

He said the police would also set up banners in many locations reading "No Speeding while Mudik (Traveling Home)" or "Do not Use Motorcycles for Mudik."

For economic reasons hundreds of thousands of people would "mudik" or travel from Jakarta to their home villages in West, Central and even East Java for the Lebaran post-fasting holiday.
