Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Close to one million people from villages are expected to migrate to cities after Idul Fitri, said Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar.

"This is a phenomenon where people from villages migrate to cities after Idul Fitri or Lebaran holidays. They come to urban areas to seek jobs," explained the minister on Monday.

He said since most people migrating to cities do not have proper skills, they find it extremely difficult to get jobs.

Besides Jakarta, other cities should also anticipate the possibility of unemployment and other social problems.

According to the minister, people from villages and small cities often try their luck in big cities such as Jakarta.

Therefore, the government has come up with a number of ways to increase unemployment and reduce poverty.

"Regional autonomy can help reduce the problems of urbanisation. Through regional autonomy, centres of growth can be developed. Additionally, rural areas can be developed further to retain villagers in their hometowns," explained the minister.

The ministry of manpower and transmigration is also working closely with regional and local governments to enhance their manpower planning to absorb workers in organisations and fight unemployment in small cities.

According to the minister, local governments should actively seek solutions to attract investments and create job opportunities.

The government is keen to develop the country`s infrastructure through labour-intensive projects. Therefore, projects should be planned wisely.(*)
