The law center will help speed up the process of drafting the legislation by the lawmakers.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The House of Representatives will have a law center to facilitate the National Legislation Program, House speaker Marzuki Alie said.

"If the government has a National Law Agency, the House of Representatives also should have a law center to strengthen the data base needed in drafting the country`s legislation," Marzuki Alie said here on Tuesday.

The law center will help speed up the process of drafting the legislation by the lawmakers, he said.

He said the House is to provide a number of draft laws including bills on food, People Housing Saving, village, protection of Indonesian workers abroad , etc.

So far there have been 23 draft laws being deliberated to be wrapped up in the first and second parliamentary sessions, he said.

He said the draft law on Penal Code to replace one inherited from the Dutch colonial administration, still used until today, is still a subject of debate at the House.

"The new Penal Code, after it is passed into law, would constitute a big achievement of the nation, after so many years the country has to rely on one inherited from the colonial time," he said.

He said the old Penal Code after being used for 30 years already have many weaknesses and need revisions to be up to date.

The draft law on Protection of Indonesian Workers abroad is to replace the Law No 39 of 2004 .(*)
