There should be no longer sugar import because our country is able to meet the national need for sugar."
Banyuawangi, East Java (ANTARA News) - Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri said she rejected the importation of sugar because the country was able to meet the need of people for sugar.

"There should be no longer sugar import because our country is able to meet the national need for sugar," Megawati, who is also general chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Parti of Struggle (PDIP) said.

The former president made the remarks when she was campaigning for East Java governor candidate Bambang-Said pair at Wirabhakti Sports Hall here on Saturday (August 24).

Megawati, who is a daughter of Indonesian founding father Soekarno, said that East Java as the basis of Indonesia`s biggest sugarcane plantation should meet the national need for sugar.

"I also called on our colleague Bambang DH whom I have nominated as a candidate of the East Java governor, to firmly reject sugar import," she said about Bambang who at that time was at her beside.

When staging a campaign with Megawati, Bambang was not accompanied by Said Abdullah, his pair in the gubernatorial race, because Abdullah was also launching a campaign together with Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Bondowoso and Situbondo districts.

"Pak (Mr) Bambang DH pairs up with Pak Said Abdullah who is now making a campaign tour of the region together with Pak Jokowi," Megawati said.

Megawati called on PDIP supporters and sympathizers in Java to vote for the Bambang DH - Said Abdullah pair in the East Java regional head elections.
