"I urge all elements not to drag TNI into the political arena, which could prevent TNI from taking a neutral stand," General Moeldoko said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The new chief of the Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI), General Moeldoko, said TNI and all national elements should ensure that next year`s general elections run smoothly, orderly, freely, fairly, and peacefully.

General Moeldoko, who has taken over Admiral Agus Suhartono`s position, here on Wednesday added that the success of the 2014 general elections and the democratic and peaceful succession of national leadership are important.

He also urged all elements in the country to keep TNI and the political space separate to maintain TNI`s neutrality.

"I urge all elements not to drag TNI into the political arena, which could prevent TNI from taking a neutral stand," he said.

Moeldoko, meanwhile, assured the public that TNI would abide its strategic plans mandated by the former commander.

"TNI will also act effectively and professionally in line with the needs," he stated.

Former commander Admiral Agus Suhartono mentioned that TNI must maintain its neutrality in the general elections next year and safeguard the event to ensure its smooth and peaceful implementation.

Agus said the TNI culture focuses on cadre building. Transfer of posts is needed to sharpen vision and mission with regard to the implementation of TNI`s main role, he added.

General Moeldoko was inaugurated as the new TNI chief by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential palace last Friday.(*)
