The front wagon of the commuter train, which was travelling from Serpong in the Tangerang province to Tanah Abang in Jakarta was derailed and caught fire soon after hitting the fuel truck.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Seven people reportedly died following a crash involving a commuter train and a fuel truck near Bintaro Permai areas railway crossing in the Tangerang province, on Monday at 11:15 West Indonesia Time (WIB).

The front wagon of the commuter train, which was travelling from Serpong in the Tangerang province to Tanah Abang in Jakarta was derailed and caught fire soon after hitting the fuel truck.

"The bodies have been taken to the Pertamina Hospital," police personnel Aiptu Sunarto, who helped with the evacuation process, said on Monday.

Among the casualties were the commuter train's machinist and his assistant. Meanwhile, the driver of the fuel truck has survived.

Fransiska Ninditya, a witness, said the fire, which was followed by a plume of thick black smoke, had occurred soon after the train hit the fuel truck near Bintaro. The wagon was mostly occupied by female passengers.

"I have a headache from inhaling the thick smoke," Fransiska stated.

The injured passengers were taken to the nearest hospital in the Bintaro area.(*)
