Head of the Central Data Service of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said here on Saturday that at least one house was demolished, while several were reported damaged in Krandegan, Bacan Subdistrict, Purworejo.
According to Sutopo, local BNPB offices in Purworejo, Cilacap, Kebumen and other districts, which also were shaken by tremors, were still collecting information about damaged buildings.
Meanwhile, the local office of BNPB in Purworejo reported that residents rushed from their homes and office buildings as the earthquake shook the region for about 20 seconds.
He said that the intensity of the earthquake varied from Yogyakarta, Solo, Boyolali, Klaten, Magelang, Sragen and Semarang.
The quake was centered 104 kilometers southwest of Kebumen district at a depth of 48 kilometers in the southern sea off Central Java province.
No casualties have been reported, though the quake was felt by residents living in Yogyakarta province, West Java province, and Jakarta.
In Kebumen district, the quake forced local residents to remain outdoors. However, there were no immediate reports of damage.
The trembling, which lasted for 30 minutes in Purworejo district, caused damage to several houses in Krandengan village, with one collapsing, said officials.
In Cilacap district, the quake also forced residents to stay outdoors. But there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.
Saturdays temblor was also felt by residents living as far away as Central Javas northern coastal city of Semarang and the West Java provincial capital of Bandung.
Additionally, another earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, also hit the Banda Sea in Maluku province on Friday night, the BMKG reported.
The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 21.31 western Indonesia time, was located 117 km southwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat district, or 441 km southeast of the provincial capital Ambon at a depth of 29 km, according to Yarman, head of the Kotabumi geophysics station in Lampung province.
The quake, however, did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, according to the agency.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 is considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage.
