Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA News) - The Office of Surveillance and Customs Services at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport foiled eight attempts to smuggle drugs through the airport in January.

"The types of narcotics that were smuggled were methamphetamine, reaching a total 13,208 grams," stated the Head of Office of Surveillance and Customs Services of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Okto Irianto, in Tangerang on Saturday.

Okto pointed out that the suspects who had been arrested are two Indonesian, two Chinese, three Malaysian and one person each from Hong Kong and Thailand. The street value of the seized drugs was estimated at Rp17,821,900,000.

According Okto, the most commonly used mode of smuggling involves hiding narcotics in luggage, shoes or handbags.

"In fact, there is also smuggling done by hiding drugs in underwear. This is an old tactic," Okto said.

Okto added that the evidence and suspects have been handed over to the Soekarno-Hatta Resort Police and Narcotics National Board of Indonesia for further investigation.

Based on Article 133, Paragraphs 1 and 2 of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, if found guilty, the suspects could be will be punished by imprisonment of 15 years and a fine of Rp10 billion.

"However, because the suspects brought in drugs exceeding five grams, they can be punished with life imprisonment," he noted.
