Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will address protection steps on the irregular movement of persons during an international workshop that is to be held in Jakarta on April 21-22.

The Foreign Affairs Ministrys Director General of multilateral, Hasan Kleib, stated during a press conference at the ministrys office in Jakarta, on Thursday, that the workshop was a follow up of the Jakarta Declaration, which was pledged by high-level representatives of the Special Conference on Irregular Movement of Persons on August 20, 2013.

"This workshop was aimed to come up with a guidelines on how to protect the victims of smuggling and trafficking when theyre arrested during their journey through the transit or destination countrys territory," Kleib explained.

On the Jakarta Declaration, the representatives agreed to establish mechanism at multilateral, regional and bilateral levels for victims of trafficking from victim identification, protection, rehabilitation, repatriation and reintegration upon return to their respective countries or origin as well as prevention of revictimization.

Kleib pointed out that the workshop will also strengthen the mechanism of Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime, which is also initiated by Indonesia.

"The workshop is more practical than Bali Process, both are complementary to one another," explained Kleib about the position of the two events.

The international workshop themed "Protection of Irregular Movement of Persons at Sea", had participation from representatives of 14 countries, including Indonesia, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Iran, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Sri Langka, and Thailand.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) will also attend the workshop.

Some prominent academia of the international law studies, such as Professor Hikmahanto Juwana from Law Faculty of University of Indonesia and an international law practitioner from Queen Mary University of London, Violetta Moreno Lax, will also join in as the speakers in the workshop.
