A member of the illegal armed ELN lost his life during a military operation that neutralized an attack on an oil pipeline.Bogota (ANTARA News) - The Colombian military said Monday it surprised a group of leftist guerrillas trying to blow up an oil pipeline and killed one of them.
The clash occurred in Arauca, a province that borders Venezuela where the National Liberation Army, the countrys second largest rebel group, is active.
"A member of the illegal armed ELN lost his life during a military operation that neutralized an attack on an oil pipeline," the army said in a statement.
It did not say exactly when the attack occurred.
The oil industry, which is booming, has been a major target of ELN attacks, hostage-takings and sabotage.
The FARC, the countrys largest guerrilla group, is in peace talks with the government, but so far they have not included the ELN.
With Colombians voting in the second round of presidential elections Sunday, the FARC has declared a unilateral cease-fire as of Monday. But the ELN has not joined it.
