Bandar Lampung (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has confirmed that the current 5.0 magnitude earthquake in North West Mentawai Island, West Sumatra, did not trigger any tsunami threat, stated a spokesperson.

"The earthquake did not trigger any tsunami threat to the surrounding coastal areas," the agencys Chief of Geophysics station in Kotabumi, Yuharman, noted here on Tuesday.

Yuharman added that the quake took place at 4:58 a.m.(GMT+8), and its epicenter was determined at 2.01 degrees south latitude and 99.14 degrees east longitude, and was at a depth of 31 kilometers.

The location of the earthquake is in the Southeast of Sumatra, 63 kilometers Northwest of Mentawai Island, 184 kilometers Southwest of Pesisir Selatan, 189 kilometers Southwest of Pariaman, 179 kilometers Southwest of Padang, West Sumatra, and 970 kilometers Northwest of Jakarta.
