Makassar (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian defense unit comprising the Military Area Command VII/Wirabuana, the Air Force Operational Commands II, and the Navy Main Base VI Makassar have made 2,957,557 bio-pore holes to commemorate the 69th Indonesian Army Anniversary.

The Chief of the Air Force Operational Commands II, Air Vice-Marshal Abdul Muis, said here on Wednesday that 1,795,557 bio-pore holes were made by the Military Area Command VII/Wirabuana.

"The Air Force Operational Commands II made over 1,150,000 holes, and the Navy Main Base VI Makassar made 12,000 bio-pore holes," he added.

He expressed hope that other institutions and communities would contribute to add more bio-pore holes.

According to him, the limited catchment area and the excessive use of ground water in some areas may cause a decrease in surface soil. The conditions will make it difficult to obtain good quality water.

The environment has undergone more and more degradation, causing floods and landslides in some areas, he added.

Abdul Muis explained that making more bio-pore holes, which is a national project, can maximize groundwater absorption and thus reduce puddles that could become sources of disease-causing bacteria.

Besides, the holes can improve the soil biodiversity and prevent erosions and landslides.

"Considering the big advantages we can draw from the bio-pore holes, we hope our efforts will be followed up by other institutions and communities," Abdul Muis said.
