This site has megalithic characteristics as indicated by a dolmen, or a portal tomb."
Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA News) - The Hatuhuran site located in Hatusua, West Seram district, Maluku, has megalithic characteristics, an archaeologist from Ambon Archaeology Office, Marlon Ririmasse, said here Thursday.

"This site has megalithic characteristics as indicated by a dolmen, or a portal tomb," he added.

He explained that the Hatuhuran site was the third observation point, coded HTS-13, that his team had found while excavating a site in Hatusua on May 16, 2014.

A dolmen, sized 1 x 1.4 meter, with three stones lying next to it, was found at the site. It is assumed that the stones were a foundation of the dolmen.

The portal tomb that looks like an isosceles triangle has ancient cultural significance to the Hatusua community. The location is considered sacred.

"There is a need for intensive research at the Hatusua pre-historic site to explore its historical values," Marlon said.

Locus HTS-13 is the interior part of the Hatusua pre-historic site, and it is surrounded by limestone and caves that most likely were used as residential spaces.

As the Hatusua site is located on the Waipirit seaport, the gateway to enter West Seram district, a 15-minute walk from here will take one to the site.

"From Ambon, we can drive, or even ride a motorbike, for about an hour to reach the Hunimua seaport in Liang village, Central Maluku, and then take a ferry to the Waipirit seaport in two hours," Marlon said. (Uu.KR-LWA/INE/KR-BSR/F001)
