Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo underlined the harmony of Islam and democracy during a bilateral meeting with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Beijing on Monday.

"Indonesia is the largest Islamic country in the world and has been conducting its presidential elections in a proper manner. This shows that Islam and democracy can run well," the President stated.

Regarding the issues of extremism and radicalism, the President remarked that Indonesia will curb and eliminate extremism and radicalism through a cultural and religious approach.

The President was accompanied by Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sofyan Djalil, Trade Minister Rahmat Gobel, and Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto. The President also emphasized that both countries needed to enhance cooperation, especially in terms of security.

Meanwhile, Obama appreciated Indonesias leadership in the region, including its role in maritime security as well as the countrys attitude that upholds democracy and pluralism.

"Indonesia is one of the worlds largest democracies and also one with a large Islamic population. I want to thank Indonesia because it has played an extraordinary role in promoting pluralism and democracy," he affirmed.

Obama pointed out that every country should comply with international norms and resolve disputes peacefully.

At the beginning of the meeting, Obama congratulated Jokowi on his election as the President of Indonesia.
