Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former junior attorney-general for general crimes HM Prasetyo has been appointed Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia.

A politician from the National Democrat (NasDem) Party, Prasetyo had long been in the field of intelligence and had served as a state prosecutor in several cases in the country. In 2005, he was a junior attorney-general for general crimes.

He later entered politics and has been on the Advisory Board of Nasdem since 2011.

Although a number of anti-corruption activists were opposed to HM Prasetyos candidacy for attorney-general, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) went ahead with his appointment and sworn him in on Thursday (November 20).

Anti-corruption activists remarked that the law could now be brought to the political arena, as HM Prasetyo was a Nasdem Party member.

Prasetyo is an alumnus of the Faculty of Law, University of Lampung-UI, (1971) and SMA Bojonegoro, East Java, (1965).

Prasetyo has replaced previous attorney general Basrief Arief whose tenure ended with the end of the working period of the United Indonesia Cabinet (KIB) II.
