Abraham also asserted that the Commission will detain Budi Gunawan.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman, Abraham Samad, asserted on Thursday that the investigation of Commissioner General Budi Gunawans role in an alleged graft case will be resolved as soon as possible.

"We are focusing on this case to resolve it as soon as possible and not to create any problem," Abraham Samad said here on Thursday.

Abraham also asserted that the Commission will detain Budi Gunawan.

"This has been the tradition. It will never happen in the Commission that someone who has been named a suspect will not be detained," Abraham affirmed.

However, the detention will happen only when the necessary documents are at least 50 percent in place.

"Based on the standard operating procedure of the KPK, when the procedure of filling the documents is 50 percent over, Budi Gunawan will be detained. So, people need not have doubts about it," Abraham emphasized.

According to him, the evidence in the possession of the Commission has determined Budi Gunawans status as a suspect.

"Tradition in the KPK has been that we make someone a suspect when we have more than two items of evidence against him/her. Therefore, this case might run a bit longer, if we look at the range of the case, because we will need more than two items of evidence," Abraham added.

With the backing of evidence, Abraham noted, "there have been no cases we failed to prove in court".

Earlier, National Police Chief General Sutarman said the police will provide legal assistance to Commissioner General Budi Gunawan after he was named a suspect in an alleged case of corruption here on Tuesday.

"The police will provide legal aid based on the existing law," he stated when asked about it.

According to Sutarman, the police respected the legal processes that are carried out by the KPK, which has made Gunawan, the head of the Indonesian Police Education, a suspect in an alleged bribery case.

"(The KPK) named Commissioner General Gunawan a suspect in an alleged corruption case. General Gunawan allegedly received pledges when he was the head of the career development bureau of the police headquarters from 2003 to 2006 and while holding other positions," Abraham Samad affirmed at the KPK building.

The anti-graft body has charged Gunawan with violation of article 12 a or b, article 5 paragraph 2, paragraph 11, or article 12B of law number 31/1999 as has been amended by law number 20/2001 on corruption eradication in conjunction with article 55 paragraph 1.1 of the Criminal Code.

The articles pertain to civil servants or state administrators receiving gifts or pledges in exchange of services provided in the capacity of their positions.(*)
