Yusuf Kalla understands that the investigation did not satisfy all parties.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has investigated cases of human rights violations that took place during the riots in May 1998, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.
"The government has been trying to properly investigate cases of human rights violations that took place during the riots in May 1998," he stated here on Tuesday.
The vice president added that ballistic examinations had been conducted in the Netherlands.
In addition, legal and political processes have also been carried out in courts and in the House of Representatives, Kalla affirmed.
Moreover, he understands that the investigation did not satisfy all parties.
"Not only in Indonesia, a president was killed in the United States as well. The US government has yet to find the gunman," he pointed out.
Earlier, the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) had urged the Indonesian government to concern itself with human rights violations that workers in various sectors face.
"We urge the government to tackle the various forms of human rights violations against workers and to improve, strengthen, and supervise efforts to combat violation of labor rights," Coordinator of Kontras Haris Azhar said here on Saturday.
He pointed out the human rights violations that occurred in Benjina, Maluku, and in Tangerang.
The government should take into account the protection that migrant workers facing execution lack, he noted, adding that it should also prevent the criminalization of human rights activists.(*)
