We hope athletes from South Sumatra can represent the national team in the Asian championship."Palembang (ANTARA News) - The Executive Board of the Indonesian Swimming Association (PRSI) has chosen South Sumatra province to host the Asian Water Polo Championship in October 2016, a spokesman said.
South Sumatra was selected to organize the water polo championship because the province has an international standard swimming arena at the Jakabaring Sports Complex in Palembang, the chairman of the provincial chapter of PRSI, Widodo, stated here on Tuesday.
"In addition to having a facility where the water polo championship can be held, South Sumatra also has experience in organizing international events, such as the SEA Games, the Islamic Solidarity Games, and the ASEAN University Games," he pointed out.
To prepare for the event, the PRSI will train swimmers so that athletes from the province have the opportunity to participate in the Asian tournament.
"We hope athletes from South Sumatra can represent the national team in the Asian championship," Widodo remarked.
Moreover, the secretary of the South Sumatra provincial chapter of the PRSI, Hunce J. Hamzah, explained that providing such training is also aimed at preparing the local athletes for the 19th National Sports Week (PON), which will be held in West Java in 2016.
Two senior athletes, Zubaidah and Siti Balqis, who were members of the South Sumatra contingent in the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, are expected to be able to motivate the local team to perform their best in PON, he noted.
