"Indonesia can carry out the reformation toward democracy life. So, the history recorded Indonesia as a democracy country," Zulkifli Hasan said when opening the Plenary Session of the Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Annual Session here on Friday.
According to Hasan, all elements of the nation realized that the key to prosperity is having quality human resources.
However, he noted, Indonesias economic development should not depend on the natural resources.
Therefore, Indonesia should focus on creating quality of human resources rather than exporting natural resources.
In the 1980s, Indonesia relied on natural resources such as crude oil and wood. As a result, the forest areas were damaged which led to landslides and floods. While the foreign exchange which was earned from the export of natural resources did not restore its impacts.
In the 1990s, Hasan noted, Indonesia still relied on the export of raw natural resource commodities such as petroleum, coal and other minerals.
"Natural resources continued to decrease, while it was influenced by international market price movements," he stated.(*)
