This number might increase as only four regions had announced candidates until 08.40 p.m., KPU Chief Husni Kamil Manik, said.
KPU is also awaiting a list of the candidates from Surabaya city, Samarinda city, and the Pacitan district, which are still registering candidates after the registration period was extended, he added.
The 765 pairs of candidates comprise 20 pairs of gubernatorial and vice gubernatorial candidates, 644 pairs of district and vice district head candidates and 101 pairs of mayoral and vice mayoral candidates, he said.
Manik pointed out that 19 of the 20 pairs of gubernatorial and vice gubernatorial candidates had been nominated by political parties and only was running as an independent candidate.
The 644 pairs of district and vice district head candidates comprise of 544 candidates nominated by political parties and 100 independent candidates, he added.
He also stated that 81 of the 101 pairs of mayoral and deputy mayoral candidates were nominated by political parties and 20 were running as independent candidates.
The campaigning period will last from August 27 and end on December 5.(*)
