Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) plans to popularize biotechnology among the public through an open house activity at the Cibinong Science Center in West Java.

"We hope the open house activity can attract students interest for engaging in biotechnology research in the future," said the head of LIPIs Biotechnology Research Center, Bambang Sunarko in a statement on Thursday.

He noted that through such an activity, LIPI wanted to arouse public awareness about the importance of biotechnology, which has a direct relation with important issues, such as food, energy, and medicines.

Themed "Biotechnology is Fun," the open house activity will be held on November 19 and 20, 2015 with its main target being the general public, especially students.

Bambang said the activity has been packaged in a popular and interactive manner, in which the visitors are introduced to the work of a biotechnology laboratory.

Besides, there will be a demonstration of making fermented milk (yoghurt), cheese, compost, mozzarella cheese, cattle genetic trait detection, crop multiplication and gogo rice crosses.

Meanwhile, the Head of Management and Dissemination of the results of the Biotechnology Research Center, I Syamsidah Rahmawati, added that another goal of the open house activity is to attract people to genetic engineering technology, the cutting edge of biotechnology.

"People need to know the work and simple applications of biotechnology, and therefore, LIPI will show it in a fun way," said Syamsidah.(*)
