Police chief said that the police will only move if the Attorney General`s office and the MKD confirm that a crime had been committed in the case of Setya and Freeport.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti said on Thursday that the police have been unable to investigate the alleged case against House Speaker Setya Novanto related to PT Freeport Indonesia.

He said the police are still awaiting the results of the investigation being conducted by the House of Representatives Ethical Council (MKD) and the Attorney Generals office.

"I recently spoke about it with the Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence, who said it is still under investigation in terms of finding legal facts. MKD also hasnt finished its investigation. PT Freeport, too, it yet to issue a statement," he said after attending the National Conference on Corruption Eradication at the parliament building.

He added that the police will only move if the Attorney Generals office and the MKD confirm that a crime had been committed in the case of Setya and Freeport.

Badrodin said the police could also act if PT Freeport, as the aggrieved party in the case, came forward and made a complaint to them.

"We need cooperation. If PT Freeport is unwilling, we will not be able to do anything. It is not about whether a report is available or not, but cooperation from PT Freeport is needed. How can we handle the case if the one hurt in the case it is unwilling to take action," he said.

House Speaker Setya has been accused of allegedly using his proximity to President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla to demand shares from PT Freeport.

The MKD has held sessions since Wednesday to prove if ethical violations have indeed been made by Novanto in the case.

The Attorney Generals office on the other hand has also said it will investigate the case to see if a crime has been committed.(*)
