"The state must uphold the rights of its disabled citizens and must also contribute to their future life," President Jokowi remarked while commemorating International Disability Day at the State Palace here on Thursday.
The head of state noted that several parties only spoke about the number of disabled people in Indonesia.
"It is as though they only speak about figures. I do not think this is a matter of figures. No matter how many, or even if it is just one individual, the state must come forward to fulfill and protect their rights as citizens," Jokowi emphasized.
The president expressed hope that the commemoration of International Disability Day would raise awareness among all sections of the society over the need to fulfill, protect, and uphold the rights of people with disabilities for their better future in various sectors.
He further revealed that the government is committed to improving educational and public transportation facilities and to create job opportunities for disabled people.
In order to provide work to disabled people in various fields, Jokowi has vowed to build factories designed to employ them.
"I have ordered the minister to set up a pilot project factory for disabled people," he said.
"If this is successful, the government will build other factories. God Willing, other factories will follow suit," he added.
He said several others steps could still be undertaken for disabled people, such as initiatives by companies operating in the business sector as part of their corporate social responsibility.(*)
