Police also appealed to the people not to light fire crackers at locations where the event is celebrated.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta police have urged people to shun any negative activities including consuming narcotic drugs at parties to mark the New Year.

"Please do not make the New Year eve celebrations a reason to take narcotic drugs as you party. Sometimes, people are carried away due to New Year-induced euphoria," Jakarta Metropolitan Police chief Inspector General Tito Karnavian said at the City Hall here on Monday.

He said the police would carry out operations on the eve of New Year at a number of discotheques and other centers of night entertainment and will collect urine samples from the guests to carry out drug tests.

He said if a guest is found having consumed narcotic drugs, legal action will be taken.

"So, please do not use narcotic drugs, or drink alcohol or get involved in illegal motorbike road racing or brawls. The New Year eve event must not be celebrated by indulging in such activities. We will certainly take action if any such acts are noticed," he said.

Karnavian also appealed to the people not to light fire crackers at locations where the event is celebrated.

"No one is allowed to burst, buy or sell fire crackers. If anyone is found involved in such activities, I will order legal procedures to be initiated against them. We will also conduct operations against fire crackers," he said.

He said a large number of his personnel and members of the city administration police would be deployed to ensure security during the New Year eve.

"For the New Year, the police will deploy 18,000 police forces. In addition to personnel from the city police, a total of 20,000 people will be out on the roads," he said.

Although the New Year eve celebration will be centered at Ancol, he appealed to all Jakarta residents not to throng Ancol in too huge numbers as celebrations would be happening in other places as well.

"One may go to Ancol but this is not an obligation. Similar celebrations will also be on at other places, such as a car free night, art performances in each of the mayoralties at the Old City area and at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah," he said.(*)
