Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Palembang Mayor Harnojoyo has sacked two officials for violating bylaws as they ordered his subordinates to cut down trees in the heart of the capital of South Sumatra province.

Harnojoyo said here on Wednesday he found several officers of the city street lighting, landscaping and funeral service office (DPJPP) cutting down trees on Monday (March 28) at around 10.00 p.m. local time.

"The two officials were chiefs of the landscaping section and the reforestation sub-section of DPJPP," he said.

He said he found DPJPP officers cutting down trees in the yard of the Bumbu Desa restaurant while he and other city officials were preparing to monitor the state of cleanliness along the main roads in the city.

The DPJPP officers told the mayor that the two officials had ordered them to cut down the trees.

"This is dangerous. How could they unilaterally order them to cut down trees? Dont they understand the bylaw?" he said.

The mayor also ordered an investigation to check if the restaurant staff was in any way involved in the case as the cutting down of trees could have resulted in expanding its parking lot.

"The matter is being investigated. If the restaurant management is found guilty, its permit will be revoked," he said.
