Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Through the rehabilitation institution of the government and community, the Indonesia National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has rehabilitated 42,429 drug addicts during the period between 2015 and June 2016.

Of the 42,429 drug addicts, 2.5 thousand had been rehabilitated at the BNN rehabilitation halls in Lido Bogor, Baddoka Makasar, Tanah Merah Samarinda, and Batam, according to a press statement received here on Tuesday.

From 2015 to June 2016, the BNN has conducted urine tests on 186,533 people for the early detection of drug abuse at educational institutions and work places.

In addition, BNN adopted alternative measures by offering skill-based training to 705 residents in areas prone to narcotics during the 2015-2016 period.

In a bid to curb the drug menace, BNN has undertaken preventive efforts by raising awareness via communication, information, and educational channels across the country by engaging print, electronic, and online media, as well as by increasing direct interactions with the public.

In the field of community development, BNN has also established an anti-drug task force in all regions in Indonesia, with a total of 19,854 people comprising students from high schools and colleges as well as members of private and government agencies and communities.

This major step is the right strategy to reinforcing the "peoples power" against illicit drug trafficking syndicates.
