Susi told delegates at a meeting organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome on Thursday, that there were less cases of IUU fishing after the government announced moratorium in operation license of foreign fishing vessels and imposed ban on transshipment in the sea on in Indonesian waters.
The minister said the policy has resulted in an increase in domestic fish supply and fish production of the countrys local fishermen, according to a report from the Indonesian embassy in Rome with copy received by ANTARA on Friday.
Susi was one of the speakers at the session of FAO Committee of Fisheries session together with representatives of various international organizations including FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, International Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Network, The Pew Charitable Trust and International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF).
Also speaking at the session was representative of Google Inc, presenting satellite pictures showing massive illegal fishing and damage to the ecosystem as a result of arbitrary practices of illegal fishing.
The presentation succeeded in drawing greater attention to closer cooperation in the fight against IUU fishing, the embassy said in its report.
The invitation of the Indonesian Marine and Fisheries Minister to international meeting indicated international recognition of the Indonesian role in battling IUU fishing , the report said.(*)
