Despite the increase, the provinces per capita rice consumption was still lower than the national average, chief of the agencys food consumption and security section, Lilis Irianingsih, said on the sidelines of the West Java provincial level menu creation contest here on Tuesday.
She said per capita non-rice carbohydrate consumption from tubers reached 10.2 kg, animal food consumption stood at 33 kg and vegetable and fruit consumption touched 74.4 kg last year.
According to the result of a study, the quality of the West Java peoples food consumption is still far from ideal as the provinces energy need is still dominated by rice which accounted for 70 percent, she said.
In fact, to achieve the ideal standard of food consumption, rice consumption should represent 50 percent of the energy sufficiency rate (AKE), she said.
"So the West Java peoples food consumption is still dominated by rice," she noted.
The provincial government is stepping up its efforts to introduce non-rice carbohydrate to the people by adopting "one day no rice policy", she said.
"We will intensify the one day no rice campaign to reduce rice consumption as part of efforts to make it a success," she said.(*)
