Ambon (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale jolted Southwest Maluku District, Maluku Province, on Sunday at 11:18 a.m. local time.

The quakes epicenter was located at 6.40 degree southern latitude and 127.10 degree eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, and some 175 km northeast of Southwest Maluku District, according to information from the Ambon meteorology and geophysics office.

Maluku is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis as it lies on the convergence point of three of the regions major tectonic plates - Pacific, Indo Australia, and Eurasia.
