Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Senator from Bengkulu Muhammad Soleh has been elected new chairman of the countrys Senate , Regional Representative Council (DPD) .

Muhammad Soleh was favored by 51 of 117 voters among the DPD members defeating 10 other candidates in the election held here on Tuesday.

The election was held and ran without incident in a plenary session of the Indonesian Senate.

The other candidates included Parlindungan Purba of North Sumatra, Hardi Slamet Hood from Riau Islands, Muhammad

Syukur from Jabi, Andi Surya from Lampung, Instyawati Ayus

from Riau, Nofi Chandra from West Sumatra, Hudarni Rani

from Bangka Belitung, Abdul Gafar Usman from Riau, Fahrurazi from Aceh and Ahmad Kanedi from Bengkulu.

Muhammad Soleh replaced Irman Gusman who was dismissed after he was named a suspect in corruption case last month by the Corruption Eradication Commisison (KPK).

There were originally 12 candidates presenting their visions and missions before the election took place but one candidate Asmawati from South Sumatra withdrew. (*)
