Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia plans to increase its personnel in the UN peacekeeping forces to 4,000 by 2019, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said here on Wednesday.

"Indonesia will start enhancing the number of its personnel serving with the UN peacekeeping troops in the future so that it reaches 4,000 by 2019," she stated.

At present, Indonesian personnel serving with the UN peacekeeping forces number 1,881, she noted.

This makes Indonesia the 16th biggest country among the 122 nations contributing personnel to the UN forces.

Retno underlined that Indonesia has had diplomatic relations with 186 out of 193 UN member countries and strategic partnerships with 18 countries.

She stressed that Indonesias active participation in peace keeping activities would be stepped up throughout.

She emphasized that the government has an obligation to provide protection and legal counseling to citizens facing legal problems abroad.

She pointed out that the government has always reminded its citizens abroad to abide by the laws of the countries they stay in.

"It will be impossible for the government to intervene in the legal system of other countries," she commented.
