"I need to remind you that solidarity must not only emerge during disasters. It must also be felt in our daily life, in concrete ways, and should not be just words," Jokowi stated.
Palangka Raya, C Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo called on the nation here on Tuesday to increase solidarity to settle the various challenges being faced by the country.

He said the country has seen proof of how national solidarity resolves problems, as seen during natural disasters.

He made the statement at the commemoration of National Social Solidarity Day 2016, which was celebrated in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, that day.

"However, I need to remind you that solidarity must not only emerge during disasters. It must also be felt in our daily life, in concrete ways, and should not be just words," he stated.

President Widodo noted that the commemoration of National Social Solidarity Day was actually an observance of the original values of the Indonesian nation, which took root long before the countrys independence.

He explained that these values were later used by the founding fathers to form the concept of "Pancasila" (five principles: Belief in the one and only God, just and civilized humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy guided by inner wisdom and unanimity among representatives, and social justice for all the people of Indonesia). Pancasila became the foundation of Indonesias statehood and nationhood.

"Once again, I stress the importance of making social solidarity felt in daily life and not merely used as a subject of discussion. It must be made real by helping each other. Social solidarity, Pancasila, and unity in diversity must be instilled in our lives and that of our families," he remarked.

The event was attended by a number of cabinet ministers including the coordinating minister for human development and culture, Puan Maharani.(*)
